Regenerative Apiculture

A living-systems approach to healthier bees, better beekeeper livelihoods, and honey you can trust.

In 2021, a small group of beekeepers, researchers, and industry leaders set out to answer a hard question: what would it take to make U.S. apiculture regenerative — not just sustainable, not just organic, but genuinely capable of restoring the landscapes it depends on? The result is our Regenerative Apiculture White Paper: more than twenty interviews, dozens of working sessions, and a full review of the science behind honey bee health, honey fraud, and pollinator conservation in the United States.

White Paper Introduction

In the United States, the honey bee (A. mellifera) serves as both a critical agricultural pollinator and a lens through which to examine the complex interplay between food systems, ecosystem health, and human-managed landscapes. Honey bees are bellwethers of systemic fragility within modern agriculture, revealing how land use, chemical inputs, market pressures, and management decisions ripple across ecological and economic systems. For millennia, human cultivation, land management, and migration have reshaped terrestrial ecosystems. Today, by examining the honey bee and the challenges it faces, we can better understand these dynamics and identify pathways toward agricultural systems that support bees, beekeepers, and the landscapes on which they depend.

To ground this work, we asked a central question: What role can the honey bee play in the regeneration of agricultural systems, natural resources, and the terrestrial ecosystems upon which we all rely? Viewed through this lens, honey bees occupy a unique position between the demands of food production and the need to maintain, restore, and regenerate ecosystem function and health. Their well-being is inseparable from soil vitality, water quality, plant diversity, and pollinator abundance—making apiculture a powerful entry point for regenerative transformation.

Adopting a living systems approach, we analyzed the U.S. apiculture industry as an interconnected environmental, economic, and social system. Our research included interviews and consultations with a diverse set of stakeholders across the apiculture value chain, including beekeepers operating at multiple scales, researchers, honey suppliers, consumer brands, and honey testing laboratories. These conversations, together with an extensive review of scientific literature and industry research, revealed both the structural challenges facing U.S. apiculture and the significant opportunity to realign the sector around measurable regenerative outcomes.

This whitepaper synthesizes findings from more than twenty formal interviews, dozens of working meetings, and a wide-ranging review of current research and practice. It seeks to describe the systemic challenges facing the U.S. apiculture industry and to identify practical pathways toward a regenerative apiculture system—one that improves honey purity and cleanliness, strengthens honey bee health and resilience, supports regenerative beekeeping practices, delivers positive landscape and biodiversity outcomes, and restores transparency and integrity across the honey supply chain.

Building on this foundation, the Regenerative Apiculture Working Group (RAWG) has convened a board of experienced advisors and developed a draft Regenerative Apiculture Practices and Outcomes Standard (RAPOS). In parallel, we have proposed a multi-site field study designed to test whether the draft standard produces its intended ecological, economic, and supply chain outcomes across diverse geographies and management contexts. RAWG’s draft Regenerative Organic Apiculture Standard is available to mission-aligned partners and collaborators upon request. Together, the whitepaper, draft standard, and proposed field testing are intended to move regenerative apiculture from concept to evidence-based practice.

This work is designed to be collaborative. RAWG seeks to partner with beekeepers, researchers, land managers, honey brands, agricultural producers, food companies, conservation organizations, certification bodies, and mission-aligned funders to rigorously test, refine, and scale regenerative apiculture standards. By doing so, we aim to align product authenticity with ecological regeneration—demonstrating that clean, verifiable honey can coexist with healthy bees, resilient livelihoods, biodiverse landscapes, and transparent supply chains.

Success in this endeavor is defined by measurable outcomes: verified honey purity and cleanliness; improved honey bee health and resilience; improved livelihoods for beekeepers; adoption of regenerative apiculture practices; demonstrable landscape and biodiversity gains across soil, water, plant, and pollinator systems; and transparent, traceable supply chains that reward integrity. These outcomes serve as RAWG’s North Star and guide the development, testing, and refinement of regenerative apiculture standards.

We offer this whitepaper as both an invitation and a foundation—for dialogue, collaboration, and investment in a regenerative future for apiculture. Support for this work enables rigorous field testing, independent measurement, and the development of credible standards capable of transforming interrelated food, ecological, and economic systems at scale.

Tim Tensen

Chief Executive Officer, Terra Genesis International

Tim leads Terra Genesis International, where his work focuses on regenerative design applied across agriculture, ecology, and enterprise — including scientifically rigorous, globally scalable monitoring and verification systems for regenerative agriculture. His interest in apiculture grew out of a broader effort to address the crisis facing pollination systems from the perspective of the U.S. honey and beekeeping industry. Tim has consulted across food and beverage, apparel, cosmetics, and land-use planning, and was a founding board member of the Regenerative Apiculture Working Group.

Rachel Kastner

Senior Regenerative Design Associate, Terra Genesis

Rachel brings a background in regenerative design and systems thinking to RAWG's work, helping translate living-systems principles into practical frameworks for the apiculture industry. Her contributions to the white paper focused on structuring the regenerative paradigm at the heart of the report — distinguishing a true regenerative approach from sustainable or organic frameworks, and grounding it in the day-to-day realities of beekeepers and landowners.

Amina Harris

Founding Director, UC Davis Honey and Pollination Center

Amina spent over a decade as founding director of the Honey and Pollination Center at the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, UC Davis, where she built programs connecting honey science, sensory research, and beekeeper education — including creating the Honey Flavor Wheel. She has worked in the honey industry for more than 45 years through her family's business, Z Specialty Food / The HIVE, in Woodland, California. Her perspective grounds the white paper's treatment of honey adulteration, market access, and the science of honey purity.

Frank Golbeck

Co-Chair, Regenerative Apiculture Working Group · Founder, Golden Coast Mead

Frank founded Golden Coast Mead in Oceanside, California in 2010, building a mead business rooted in regeneratively and sustainably sourced honey. A Navy veteran and BJCP-certified mead judge, he also co-founded the Mead Institute to establish quality standards across the mead industry. As Co-Chair of RAWG, Frank helps coordinate the effort to define regenerative beekeeping and regenerative honey — and to build the standards that verify it.
